Project management maturity of organizations

The success of your strategy execution depends on how you deal with your projects. But building and maintaining a solid project management practice is hard for any organizations. Knowing where you are, what are your strengths and weaknesses, and what is on the next level helps to develop a roadmap.

In the video below, I guide you through the levels and key dimensions of project management maturity and you can also find an overview of the levels and dimensions in the picture on the left. Levels of maturity in the model are as follows:

  • Ignorant - not interested in developing a project management practice

  • Lip service - elements of project management practice are present only for show

  • Slow reactive - project management is the necessary evil

  • Reactive - development of project management practices follows and lags needs

  • Proactive - optimized, well-maintained project management practices

Dimensions of project management maturity are:

  • Project training

  • Management support

  • Management processes

  • Funding and budgets

  • Authority of project managers

  • Project controls

  • Communications

Your level of maturity depends on your weakest dimension. When you develop a roadmap for a solid project management practice, it is always the weakest dimension what you want to develop first.
